During the World Sport Summit in Dubai, the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, discussed potential changes to one of soccer's main rules: offside.
«We are considering the offside rule, which has evolved over the years requiring the attacker to be positioned behind the defender, aligned with them. Perhaps in the future, they need to be completely in front of the defender to be offside», stated the Italian official.
«But we are also evaluating measures to prevent time wasting. It's crucial for the game to flow smoothly, so interruptions should be minimized», he added.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body that determines the laws of soccer globally, has already announced that it will study the so-called 'Wenger Law' - in honor of the former Arsenal coach who advocates the proposal - which would define offside as being completely beyond the defender, rather than just with a part of the body that can touch the ball.
