Arsenal Signs Olivia Smith for World-Record Fee

Arsenal have broken the women's transfer record to sign Olivia Smith from Liverpool for $1.36 million (£1 million).

Smith becomes the most expensive player in women's football to date after signing a four-year contract with the Gunners while Liverpool retain a sell-on clause for any future sale.

The 20-year-old began her football career in Europe with Sporting scoring 16 and assisting 10 goals in her first season for the Portuguese side which earned her a move to the WSL.

Last season, Smith was one of Liverpool's top performers in what was a challenging season for the Reds as the Canadian scored nine in her 25 appearances.

Speaking about her move to Arsenal, Smith said: "It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal.

"It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal. The atmosphere the supporters create at Emirates Stadium is incredible and I can’t wait to have that behind me now."

The $1.36 million fee for Smith, which will be paid in installments, surpasses the previous transfer record when Naomi Girma joined Chelsea from San Diego Wave for $1 million (£883,000).
