West Ham Rallies to Secure First Victory Under Nuno

West Ham secured their first Premier League win under Nuno Espírito Santo, rallying to defeat Newcastle United 3-1 at the London Stadium.

The visitors got off to a perfect start when Jacob Murphy scored just four minutes into the game, shooting low into the corner shortly after Jarrod Bowen had hit the post at the other end.

The home team quickly regrouped and believed they had won a penalty midway through the first half when Bowen was brought down by Malick Thiaw, but referee Robert Jones reversed his initial call after a VAR review showed the defender got the ball first.

West Ham's persistence paid off when Lucas Paquetá equalized with an impressive left-footed strike from distance after Crysencio Summerville’s cross was cleared into his path.

West Ham then took the lead just before halftime as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s low cross was accidentally turned into his own net by Sven Botman, making it 2-1 at the break.

The Magpies controlled much of the possession after the break but found it hard to challenge Alphonse Areola, while West Ham looked dangerous on the break.

Freddie Potts thought he had scored on his first league start, but the goal was disallowed for offside in the buildup.

The victory was confirmed deep in stoppage time when Bowen’s shot slipped through Nick Pope’s legs and substitute Tomas Soucek was on hand to tap in from close range, prompting celebrations around the stadium.

The win moves West Ham above Nottingham Forest into 18th place, three points clear of the relegation zone. Newcastle remains in the lower half of the table, still searching for their first away league win in seven months.
