Wolves Join Premier League's Longest Winless Starts

Igor Jesus’ first Premier League goal condemned Wolves to another defeat as Nottingham Forest emerged victorious 1-0 at Molineux on Wednesday night.

The loss keeps Rob Edwards’ team anchored at the bottom of the table, still hunting for their first victory after 14 games. Wolves have only managed to secure two points this season (D2 L12) - tying for the lowest record at this point in a top-flight season (adjusted to three points for a win), matching Sheffield United’s start in 2020/21. This marks the first time Wolves haven't won any of their first 14 matches since the 1983/84 season.

This dismal start places Wolves among the longest winless streaks at the start of a Premier League season:

Wolves’ grim start also ranks them among the longest winless openings in Premier League history. Only three teams have had a worse start to a season: Sheffield United, with no wins in their first 17 matches in 2020/21; QPR, who went 16 games without a win in 2012/13; and Swindon Town, who were winless in their first 15 games in 1993/94.

Wolves now share the record with Newcastle United’s 2021/22 team for the fourth-longest winless start to a Premier League season. With unfavorable results elsewhere, Wolves find themselves 12 points behind at the bottom.

A mix of factors has led to their decline, and if improvements aren't made, Wolves could be facing relegation to the Championship. Even worse, they risk setting one of the most undesirable records in Premier League history: the fewest points in a single season.

This dubious distinction is currently held by Derby County, who earned just 11 points in 2007/08, winning only one of 38 matches and losing 29.

Next, in an effort to reverse their fortunes and stop this streak of bad results, Wolves will host Manchester United at Molineux on Monday night, before traveling to the Emirates to challenge Premier League leaders Arsenal.
